Lake District

Valdez Schneider // Category:The Millers spent a weekend mid May in the Lake District, a region of England known for it's lakes, yet it seems as if it could have just as easily been named the Peak District as it seemed to us just as hilly if not hillier with potentially higher peaks than the actual Peak District. What a beautiful weekend! Every time we came round a bend, there was a new vista, as if it had been created by movie producers it was so perfect, and you could hear the collective sigh in the car---it was that remarkable, even with the rain and the cold. We spent a lot of time just driving through the district, but we also visited William Wordsworth's childhood house and Hilltop, a house and grounds that had belonged to Beatrix Potter. It was an amazing weekend.
One of our first views of the Lake District. We got out at a layby and took a few photos. It was too good to just keep driving. And thank goodness we did as the rain hit before we got to the end of our drive.
Amazing vista within the Lake District. Truly, this region is just stunning to drive through.

Emmie dressed in a period nightgown and bonnet. The children's room of the Wordsworth house is reserved, even today, for children with old fashioned toys and period clothing for the young and young at heart to dress up.
If you look closely, you can see Kate is holding a white bonnet. I did get a photo of her with it on, but I promised her I would not post that one.

On the grounds of our hotel in the Lake District. I believe that lake is Lake Coniston.
This is the front of the house where we stayed in the Lake District near Lake Windermere. It was a beautiful setting.
This is the back of the Waterhead Hotel.
In front of Hilltop, a home endowed to the National trust for preservation by Beatrix Potter (purchased entirely with her own funds from her writing). Watch the movie Miss Potter; it's a good movie and a fairly accurate portrayal of Beatrix Potter. Hilltop was recreated for the movie.
This is the garden of Hilltop. We told Emmie this was Mr. McGregor's garden. She was so excited, and searched for Peter Rabbit everywhere, and then became worried when she couldn't find him. Thankfully, we saw some rabbits near the sheep in a meadow nearby. Phew! Peter has evaded Mr. McGregor once again!

Gotta love the English and their Pub names. The best yet was "The Hurt Arms"
Something about this struck me, this post box in such a remote area. It puts me in mind of Frost's "The Road Not Taken"
We came across this valley in the Lake District sort of by accident, taking the scenic route home (thanks, GPS!). It nearly took our breath away to look at it all, and had us quaking driving down the narrow roads down to its bottom (mostly without guardrails). The sheep were all over, often within a hand's reach just outside of our car. The amazing thing was, as remote as this area was, and as difficult to access, there was a house/farm at the very bottom within the valley.
